Who are the heroes and 'trend setters' of our future generations?

It's more and more important that children and youngsters have heroes with solid morals and values which they look up to and aspire to be. But the popular influencers of today would suggest otherwise.

Do you ever wonder who are the heroes of our future leaders? The generations in school today. Who is influencing their trends, their fashions, their behaviours? And are they educating them towards a lessened consumerism way of thinking? A degrowth mindset and a holistic understanding of how we’re connected to nature perhaps?

Although there is more and more awareness among children and teens on the state of the planet and what their future could hold, their idols likely still remain celebrities within the 1%.

Football players, Pop stars, Kardashians… these are the instagram accounts that had the most followers of 2023. (3)

Kylie Jenner, one of the Kardashians, is the 4th most followed account on instagram, and around 38% of her 400million followers are under the age of 24. That’s roughly 152,000,000 people aged 24 and under who see daily content celebrating the luxurious side of plastic and oil based make-up, polyester and nylon clothing, a life of consumerism antics for the 1%. Disappointly, Leonardo Dicapro ranks as the 85th most popular instagram account who has a mere 64million followers in comparison. This is disappointing because his content is meaningful, educational, motivating and has the potential to reconnect you back to the natural world. (2)

If you are a parent of a teenager, or a care giver of some sorts, why not share Leo’s account with them and explain how purposeful it is to consume content like this? And, then lead them outside and remind them of what is real? Even just for a couple minutes, the ripple affect could be huge.

When your kid is older, and looks back at those few minutes you took to regularly educate them on the natural world, I’m pretty sure they won’t regret the times they missed out on their phones. Do you?
